Dental Health: Prevention is the Best Medicine

It probably comes as no surprise to you that the best way to make sure your teeth are in good shape is to keep them that way right from the start. Even if you’ve had problems with cavities and such in the past, it’s never too late to start taking proper care of your teeth and you can start your kids early with preventative dental care, too.

Babies and Toddlers

Don’t wait until those first baby teeth make their appearance. Use a damp rag over your finger to wipe your baby’s gums on a regular basis. There are even rubber slip on fingertip cleaners designed specifically for this purpose and nothing apart from a little water is necessary.

Once the first little pearly whites pop through the gums, it’s time to switch to a baby toothbrush. Again, use just water, since babies don’t need toothpaste and it can actually be harmful if they swallow it on a regular basis. This basic dental care can continue up through the toddler years or until your child is able to spit the toothpaste out, usually around three years. Alternatively, you may look for a toddler toothpaste that doesn’t contain fluoride.

Children

By the time your little one is ready to start using toothpaste, you should have a good toothbrushing routine down. Two to three times a day is good, with the brushing session lasting at least 60 seconds, though three minutes is actually the ideal. Setting an egg timer or playing a special song can help kids judge the amount of time to brush.

Adults

Many adults find that they are too busy to pay much attention to their teeth, but it is definitely worth making the effort. Regular brushing with fluoride enhanced toothpaste will help keep cavity causing plaque away and reduce your chances of getting sick due to a tooth decay issue. You will also save quite a bit of money by taking proper care of your teeth, which involves regular brushing (2-3 times a day) and flossing (at least once a day).

Despite there being specific cosmetic dental care instructions for each age group, there are certain things that will help anyone of any age stay on top of their dental health and ensure that problems are stopped before they even begin.

Getting regular dental care is essential in preventing tooth decay and gum disease. Your dentist can tell you if you need to step up your brushing and flossing and can also instruct you in the right way to remove plaque from your teeth. A proper cleaning is a good idea at least once or twice a year, as well.

In addition to regularly flossing and brushing, there are other steps you can take to help prevent tooth problems. Your diet is particularly important. It’s a proven fact that certain foods and beverages are more likely to cause tooth decay and stains than others. Coffee, colas and tobacco are all terrible for staining your teeth, while anything with sugar tends to promote bacterial growth and thus tooth decay. Carbs that stick to your teeth (think crackers), are also notorious for causing problems because they convert to sugar with saliva and get wedged into cracks in your molars where a toothbrush may not reach. Mouthwash can help with this.

Your best bet for healthy teeth is to eat a balanced diet and avoid junk food and having too many sweets. When you do give in to the sweet tooth, make sure you brush afterwards. A little prevention goes a long way and with the proper care, your teeth should last a lifetime intact.

Six Easy Steps to Good Dental Health

Dental health is not something that should only be addressed when there is a problem. Rather, your dental health is something you should look after on a daily basis. While that can seem daunting, it is really quite simple and can be broken down into six easy steps.

It is never too early to promote dental health. Parents should begin “brushing” their infants’ gums even before teeth erupt. This will not only help them become used to the sensation, it will also ensure that their gums stay clean. At this stage, however, rather than using a toothbrush, parents should simply wipe their infants’ gums with a clean, damp washcloth.

The cloth can continue to be used as baby teeth break through. In both infancy and toddlerhood, it is important to not let your child fall asleep with a bottle of milk or juice. Doing so can cause dental health problems as the sugar from the drinks can settle on their teeth and lead to cavities.

Food with higher water content helps to neutralize the sugar content and also stimulate the secretion of saliva. Acidic foods the likes of tomatoes, citrus fruits and lemons should also be included as part of a larger meal in order to decrease the acidic environs which your teeth will exposed. Dental health should be taken into serious consideration.

But brushing won’t remove all the plaque from your teeth. For the spaces between your teeth, you need to floss. Flossing daily between your teeth and under the gum line helps to rid your mouth of plaque that a toothbrush can’t reach, helping to ensure your good dental health.

A part of their dental health care that many people neglect is the personal oral exam. This step sounds much more complicated than it really is. A personal oral exam, put simply, consists of looking at the inside of your mouth for sores or lesions. The presence of either of those things could be a symptom of a bigger problem and therefore would warrant a trip to the dentist.

And that is the last piece of the puzzle. Even if a person does everything else they should, skipping their twice yearly trips to the dentist could be devastating to their dental health. The dentist looks not only for cavities, but also does a more thorough version of that personal oral exam. While looking at home is helpful, it is imperative that someone who truly knows what they are looking for checks your mouth regularly as well.

However, if you follow all of those simple steps, maintenance of your dental health is assured. And seeing as your mouth is more important than just a set of pearly whites, it should be considered time and effort well spent.

Simple Answers to the Question - What Can Cause Bad Breath?

Everyone has had bad breath at least once in their life. It happens. Maybe you ate something, or you forgot to brush your teeth. However, there are people that have chronic bad breath, or halitosis. And sometimes they don’t even know their breath stinks! Friends and family don’t like to bring it up because a persons breath can actually be a very personal topic. So, what really does cause bad breath? Can it be avoided? Knowing a few simple facts can prevent a lot of embarrassment later.

Things That Can Cause Bad Breath

Onions and garlic are the most common odor causing examples of foods with such potent smells that they often remain on one’s breath for a long time. Brushing teeth and using mouth fresheners may offer no more than short-lived relief, because traces find their way in to the exhaled breath from blood, after the ingredients have been digested. However, these kinds of aromatic foods have become so notorious that many people now avoid them as much as possible.

Smelly foods can not only flow through the blood, but if left in the mouth after eating, they can cause odor causing bacteria to grow. If the food particles that can be left on the teeth after meals is not brushed clean, the food rots causing bad breath.

Some people have a hard time with the metabolic breaking down of certain oral bacteria. In varying degrees, it can affect about 25% of the population! A doctors visit would be a good start to fixing this condition.

Oral bacteria can be caused by various gum diseases which should be diagnosed by a professional.

Since there are several different reasons for bad breath, visiting a doctor and even a dentist would be the best way to discover the main cause for each person. Blood tests can help finding the root problem, and regular dental check-ups and cleanings can help find chronic odor problems. However the case, since Halitosis can be a very serious condition, it is strongly suggested to get a medical evaluation. But while you are waiting for your doctors appointment, there are several things you can do at home to help!

Staying away from tobacco, foods with strong odors, and keeping your mouth and body healthy will probably suffice in your battle against bad breath. Although we often think of kids needing reminders, adults need them too. So…remember to brush and floss daily!

What is Personal Hygiene?

Monday 28 July 2008 @ 4:11 pm

Kids need to learn at a very young age that personal hygiene is an important part of our daily lives. There are several steps that you as a parent need to take to ensure that your kids know how to care for their personal hygiene and how to maintain good personal hygiene.

In order to maintain your personal hygiene you need to know a few steps that will help you to be clean and well maintained. Hand washing is the number one way to keep from spread germs and illness from one person to another. If you sneeze, use the bathroom, eat or do anything where your hands are touching anything you need to wash them. Proper hand washing means using soap, warm water and making sure you wash each and every part of your hand including inside your fingers and under your nails.

Personal hygiene is also an important part of the work place. People who are in the work force need to maintain their personal hygiene in order to prevent the spread of disease, germs and contaminants that could affect others who work in the same place. Workers who maintain their personal hygiene also will reduce their risk of being exposes to contaminants, chemicals and will also be able to avoid certain skin conditions that could develop from poor personal hygiene.

Kids are little creatures who are always watching what their parents are doing. If a child sees you wash your hands every time you come out of the bathroom or before you get in the refrigerator then they will mimic what you are doing. Showing your kids that you are taking care of your personal hygiene will make them follow in your steps.

Yet another thing you can do to maintain your personal hygiene and also to increase the appeal of your appearance is to make sure you wear clean clothing every day. Wash your clothing in a fresh smelling detergent that will also get your clothes clean. People sweat and perspire every day and your clothing is what soaks up this wetness and smell. You don’t want to wear clothing that smells like you ran a marathon in it. Also whatever you do don’t try to cover up the smell with cologne or perfume, that will only make things worse.

Don’t forget to brush your hair at least once a day. If you do not brush your hair you will notice that you will get knots and things that will cause your hair to become greasy and oily giving it an unclean appearance. After a few days of not washing your hair you and others around you will also begin to smell an odor coming from your unclean hair.

By following doing the things you need to do in order to maintain your personal hygiene not only will you feel better but your body will also look and smell much better. People are responsive to other people who can take care of their appearance and their personal hygiene.

Personal hygiene is an important and necessary thing that needs to be incorporated into your daily life. By making time to tend to your personal hygiene each daily you are tell yourself and the rest of the world that you are proud of the person you are and that you know how to put your best foot forward when it comes to how you care for and present your body. Don’t neglect your personal hygiene because everyone will be able to notice!
